McMommy, MacGyver, and a Credit Card.

I had a date with a friend early this morning to go clean out a PTO closet at school. My mom came over to watch the kids for me, and as I was stepping out the door, I heard a scuffle.
Then Carter scream.

But a different kind of scream, you know?
The one that makes a mother's ears go up.
The kind that makes her say "Ruh-roh."

I turn around and head down the hallway.
Only Matthew is standing there.

"Where's Carter?"

Silence.

"I SAID, WHERE IS YOUR BROTHER?"

He points to Carter's room.
The door is shut.
I go to open it....

...and it is locked.

"YOU LOCKED YOUR BROTHER IN HIS ROOM?!?!?!?!?!"

And from the other side of the door I hear Carter say "Mommy, peas open door. Peas."

I immediately started trying to sweet talk him into turning the lock, which was fruitless. I tried everything I could to open the lock....paperclips, barbecue skewers, screwdrivers, etc....all to no avail.
Yeah, you never have to worry about me ever breaking into your home.

While I called my husband for advice on how to get the lock open, my mother called my father. Who upon hearing his precious grandson was locked in a room, FLEW over to my house.

Carter hears Grandpa through the door and says in his tiny voice:
"Bam-pa, I need help!"

Which apparently was all my dad needed to hear to make him morph into MacGyver.

"I need some aluminum foil, a bubble gum wrapper, and the cork from a bottle of a South American Malbec! NOW!"

After trying everything to get this lock open, even trying to pry the handle off....nothing was working.

So I called 9-1-1.

"911, what's your emergency?"
"Uh hi. My 2 year old son is locked in his bedroom."
"How long has he been in there?"
"About 15 minutes."
"Are you talking to him? Is he responding to you?"
"Yes."
"Is the room baby-proof? Is he safe?"
"Um, I think so."
"Ok, the fire department will be there soon."
"Wait a second...Aren't you going to stay on the phone with me until they get here?"
"Um, no. I think you've got the situation handled."
"Oh. Right. Well, ok. Have a good day, then."

I thought I did a good job of staying calm on the phone.
But maybe I was a little too calm?
Because isn't the 911 lady supposed to have a warm, soothing voice telling me everything is going to be ok?!
Isn't she supposed to stay on the phone with me, giving me helpful advice on what to do until help arrives?!!!
Mental note to self: If there is a next time, get more hysterical.

While waiting for the truck to arrive, things started to happen.

MacGyver starts yelling "Get me a credit card! I need a credit card!"

And the rest of Carter's rescue will be documented for you in pictures, thanks to my mother. (She proved she was the mother of a blogger, for sure, when she quietly picked up the camera and started snapping away...)

Credit cards: Apparently Not Just For Buying That
New Pair of Shoes.

The aftermath of tools. You can even see paint chips on the floor from
trying so hard to get that door handle off.

MacGyver telling the fire department: "Chill out. I got this."

Me, on the phone with McDaddy after everything was over.

Yes, I might have been shedding a tear or two.

But only because I was re-counting the horrid story of how the 9-1-1 lady abandoned me in my time of need.

Ok, fine....and MAYBE a little because I knew Carter was finally safe and wasn't going to have to survive on diaper rash cream and old cracker crumbs on the floor of his room.

So glad you little man is okay.

And, what a good grandma blogger your mom is.

(And, you are no longer allowed to complain about not being teeny-tiny...because, hello, you totally are!)

Yeah for MacGyner! Grandpas RULE!!

So glad he is okay...has your heart started beating normally yet?

OH my goodness! I would be freaking out, too! I'd be thinking the worst posible things... like what if my child decided to open his window and fall out? Or? Eek! Horrible... scary... thankfully you had your McDaddy/McGrandfather/McGyver to help you out! PHEW!!!!

P.S. Now you made me want to blog about the incident when my mom accidentally locked my baby in a HOTEL ROOM on the 19th floor of the Westin Diplomat. Huh. Future blog post to come, thanks to you.

P.P.S. And the time the same baby's leg got stuck in the crib at my mom's house, where we indeed called 9-1-1 and the fire department came.

Thanks for the ideas.

And I'm glad HE IS OKAY! Stressful situation, or what? Also... this post was very well written, McMommy. :)

And P.P.P.S I totally agree with Krystyn - look at your supermodel legs! OMG! And so tanned, too. Sigh.

I know this was so not funny at the time, but you will look back on it and laugh with the rest of us.

Poor Carter. I'm pretty sure they would have had to call 911 for me if I had to listen to one of my babies cry through the door and not be able to get them out.

Too bad the fire department didn't have to come in. Can you imagine how much he would have loved telling that story?

And.... how much trouble did big brother get into for locking him in the room?

Krystal said...

Ahh, my oldest son has done that to his 4 yr old brother many times but instead it is the bathroom he locks him into - my technique - take apart the door handle (i have learned to buy the handles with the screws on the outside - experience I tell ya) - my husband's technique - kick down the door and have Mommy repair the broken drywall with new drywall, spackle, and paint. Yeap - I'm the handy one - go figure.

And I'm with Krystyn - you so cannot complain about your weight because you are FABULOUS!)

:::wiping tears away:::

Made me a bit emotional. Had this happen to my son. Started leaving a skinny tiny screwdriver around so I could pop open the door when he did it again.

Awesome job for your dad and so glad little man is ok!

Yes, Yes. Thats all very frightening. But more importantly, there shots to be snooped into in this post! Awesome.

I love the drapery panel that you can see in the mirror in the last shot. Very nice color. Also like your flowers out front. Are they rose bushes or Camilias?

PS - Any commenters reading this that don't know me, I'm normal. Just nosy :)

We've actually been stuck in that situation before. I got a screw driver & took the doorknob off to get the door open. Who knew I could do that? I guess when your baby is in need, you do what you have to do, even if it means busting out some mad hardware skills that you didn't know you had!

What an ordeal.
Brayden locked himself in our room when he was about Carter's age & our older home had the most aggrevating locks. I had to call my hubs at work & I eventually got the doorknob off.
These boys are a mess.

oh mcmommy, I am so sorry. I got teary eyed seeing your pix wiping a tear.

Glad MacGyver came to your rescue. He's our hero!

By the way, If you think of it (not like you have anything else on your mind) I just finished writing a story involving a 911 operator (and me) that I am posting on Tuesday. It's a doozey (spelling!) I actually was not coming over to advertise my story to you, but after your experience, thought you might find it interesting (or not) LOL!

Poor little guy, hope he is not too traumatized. I'll bet he enjoyed learning how to unlock the door after he got sprung!

When I was about 3, I locked myself in the bathroom with the bathtub water running. I can actually still remember when the fireman took the door down. My mother says I actually asked him if he was Starsky or Hutch - so I didn't know the difference between police and firefighers :)

Glad everyone - including you - are okay!

Thank goodness MacGyver was there!

I think the 911 lady knew it was the great McMommy and just wanted a mention on your blog. That's why she had to make an impression.

I'm glad Carter is fine, now the main question is....are you? Do you need ice cream?

oh McMommy, you have such a fabulous way of telling stories. The shock, horror, fear, feeling of abandonment, and finally, relief - I felt them all while reading this :) So glad everything turned out ok & Carter was rescued by his superhero! My parents only used those doorknobs with the little holes in them - so you could just push something tiny & sharp in through the hole & pop the lock. My brothers were notorious for locking themselves in rooms. Must be something about boys!

I have to de-lurk on this story....

Bless your heart. I am not a mom, but I have been at my best friends house when her little one locked himself in a room and it's scary.

Glad it all worked out alright in the end!

Glad to hear he was ok. Perhaps an indoor key lock with a hidden key would be a good idea until he is old enough to be wise to the fact that that would mean that you could unlock it and come in anytime.

Now all Grandpa needs is a Stargate in his future.

Just found your blog from a link on another site and I (heart) you! :) In a "normal, non-stalkerish, blog-reading sorta way".

I called the FD once when my then 2 year-old son got his leg stuck between two of the slats on his crib. He was fine. I was made that I looked like crap when all the cute firemen showed up to rescue me. Errr, him.

Keep up the good work! Your entries are so fun to read!

Hi...found you via Life at the Circus!

I have feared this same scenario taking place in our home ever since we put a lock on our son's bedroom door.

You tell it hysterically!

Why didn't you call ME for moral support??? Isn't my number #1 on your speed dial? "Nurse Stiletto"??

I'm so sorry this happened, but I'm very proud of you for remaining calm ;-)

So glad it all turned out o.k.!

We have little "keys" over all of the mouldings around the bedroom doors. They come in real handy when my kids lock themselves in their rooms to try to escape ME!

Hahahahahahahahaha...she says with evil laughter! When will they ever learn?

Rachael said...

Holy cow! That is scary and funny all at once. I haven't had this experience yet, but my best friend once had to put her 2 year old through a window to go unlock the front door when they got locked out. I'm glad your Dad totally MacGyvered it!

Laura said...

And here I am, locking my 2 yr. old in her room so she won't escape from naptime or bedtime! (Evil mom that I am) but I always open the door once she's asleep. We keep those keys on the door moldings too, and I am SO SORRY to hear about your scare! I hope everyone is recovered!

What was Matthew doing the whole time? Boys. ; )

Glad everyone is okay and thanks to your Mom for documenting it for all of us!

So glad you got Carter out! When my son was about 6 months old I locked him in the car at the grocery store! Had to call 911 (she didn't stay on the phone with me either!). Fire department and police all showed up. Good times =)

Carrie said...

I think that the operators of 911 are not trained well. I once called 911 to report a car accident and the operator answered this way, "Hello?" I was all, "Wait, is this 911?" And the operator said, "yeah, do you need something?" Yup...good old 911. That's why I have the police in my phone. It's easier to call them directly.

when i got to the pic of you wiping tears I actually let out an audible "Awwww" Poor McMommy!! Talk about Stressfull!!! how amazingly awesome is your dad?! yay, Carter is freeeee!! :D poor little guy.
and HEY! major kudos to your mom for documenting this thru photo's! she rocks too!

I'm so glad Carter is OK! This post reminded me of losing Eli on the elevator of a 16-story condo.
Good times.

Glad he is OK! How scary! I wouldn't have thought to call 911. Credit cards are scarily helpful to open doors with.

I was getting goose bumps!!! Poor little guy - Poor YOU!!! How traumatizing for all of you! Thank Goodness for Macgyver being related to you - who knew? right?
I'm so glad that your parents were there for you!!!!
We have little keys - if I was to remain calm....
that can unlock the doors!!! YIKES!
We did have something like that happen with Chris was little - at church - he and one of his little classmates (female) were locked in the classroom together. Yep, at a young age - he had an experience of being locked up with a young lady! hmmmm
I'm so glad that you guys had a happy HAPPY ending.
BTW, I love that piece of furniture in the picture with you! It's beautiful!!! ;o)
Hugs!!!!
