Did Not Get the McMommy Seal of Approval.

I've done some posts in the past about products I really enjoy or recommend. But I've run into a string of bad luck lately with new products I've bought and tried.....and decided I should share my feelings on these with you too.

Now remember.....these are just my humble opinions of the products and my truthful experiences with them. I am only speaking for myself. Hopefully if you've tried them, you've had better luck.

First up: Olay Mascara + Make Up Remover
This was on sale at Target and so I thought I'd give it a try. Plus I like the way they said it would remove "even the heaviest makeup" and was a "no-rinse formula".

My take?

Gross. Too creamy and slimey for my liking. There was no way this was "no rinse". Even when I used a separate cleanser afterwards, I still felt like there was a layer of grease on my face. All this washing and re-washing was too time consuming for me. If anything, I want to streamline my face washing/make up removing at night....not make it longer!!

Next: Lash Stiletto Mascara by Maybelline

I'm a sucker for advertising, I guess. I bought it because I loved the ad, the packaging (the mascara bottle looks like a high heel...how fun!), the name of the mascara....it was hot. And I wanted hot stiletto lashes.

My take?

HORRIBLE. HORRIBLE. HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!! I've never used such a wimpy mascara in my life. I might as well just dipped my mascara brush in water...because it truly didn't even look like I was wearing anything on my lashes. So I put on my stilettos and kicked it to the garbage.

Next: Aveeno 70 SPF for the Face

I bought this sunblock before we went to Texas because I knew I would be spending alot of time in the sun. I've always loved Aveeno products and liked the fact that this one was formulated specifically for the face and had an SPF of 70.

My Take?

I put it on and noticed a tingling sensation happening on my face, but I didn't pay much attention to it because McDaddy was waiting for me out on the boat.

Then next day, I put it on again, more tingling...almost a burning sensation. Hmmm....that's weird.

The next day, my face was super dry and looked like I had a rash.
I stopped using it immediately.

Even stranger? I'm not the only one this happened to!
Turns out my neighbor bought the exact same sunblock. She used it on her chest and on her son's face.....both of them broke out into a rash. It makes me wonder if this was a bad batch of sunscreen or maybe there is something in it that people are allergic to?

I don't know, but my $10 bottle is in the garbage.
What a waste of good Happy Meal money.

Is there anything you have used lately that you don't recommend?

p.s. FIVE $50 gift cards up for grabs at my giveaway blog, McMommy and Me! And the gift cards are for something I actually really, really liked and was impressed with...as compared to the flops in the post up above!

Yikes! I've only tried the eye makeup remover. Wasn't my favorite, but I used it anyways..but didn't buy any more!

Here's a sunblock for the face that I DO recommend (especially since so many cause my face to break out): Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock. It's UVA/UVB. I've been using it all summer and it's great.

Loreal Skin Genesis....ugh.

I tried the pore reducer and eye wrinkle cream religiously for a whole month and didn't notice a difference. And it was like, $20 for each product, which I know isn't the most expensive face product, but it's a lot for Loreal, at Target!!!

I wish you had asked me about the Olay make up remover. I took mine back to CVS and threw a fit until they gave me my money back.

I'm not a huge fan of any Aveeno products quite honestly. Have you tried No-Ad suntan lotion? I use it on my face often, and I love it.

L'Oreal HIP Kohl Eyeliner is a BOO HISS...cute packaging that screams put me in your cart...2 min. after I put it on my top "lid" ;) it left crumbs on my cheeks from blinking!! Apparently blinking is too much to ask of an eyeliner! Not so "HIGH intensity" if you ask me!! Made me sad to waste hard earned CVS reward bucks! GRR!

1. The little pink and white exfoliator for your face, by Nutrigena, it did nothing for my face.
2. spray on Nair takes FOREVER!
3. OMG OMG this is by Sally Hansen wax for your eyebrows... but there are no strips.. you have to rip off the wax in order to rip off your eyebrows. Never again!

Funny, I ran out and bought the Neutrogena face wash you raved about and had to return it - it had this clinical smell to me (not fresh) and even though I tried a few times, I couldn't hack it.

I'm with 4D's - LOVE the Neutrogena Ultra-Sheer Dry Touch sunscreen for my face.

Mrs. Newlywed - CVS should take ANYTHING back, no questions asked. They advertise it! I would have complained to a manager.

I can't think of anything I've bought in recent days and not liked, so I'm adding a few products I love:

NYC Liquid Lip Shine in Au Naturel or Pink Sand. Cheapest (1.79 or 2/$3 at Target when on sale) and BEST lip color ever. Not sticky or drying, just perfect. I have 'em stashed everywhere.

Skintimates Shave Cream - the one that doesn't lather. Just put on a thin layer and you get a great shave and great moisturization (and McMommy, the contents are not under pressure and threatening to blow up in your shower).

Garnier Fructis Anti-Humidity Styling Cream (Smooth) - we have had one RAINY summer and this stuff has lived up to its promises!

Great post - I love this stuff!

Oh wait, here's one. I hate shaving. LOATHE it. I bought that Smooth Away buffing pad thing at Target. A male employee who definitely seemed to know what he was talking about told me he knows numerous drag queens who swear by it.

Hmmph. You're basically sandpapering your legs. The feel smooth if you rub downward, but DON'T go against the grain! And can we talk stubble?

Veet and Nair - have NEVER worked for me. EVER.

And don't get me started on Nad's.

Until I hit the lottery and can afford full-on laser hair removal, it's me and a razor.

PS LOVE my pedi-egg!

I can't think of anything off the top of my head, but I hate buying something and then find out that I wasted my money.

hmmm...good to know (esp. about the Lash Stiletto - I LOVE me a good mascara & am a SUCKER for packing too!). I really, really like the Neutrogena for Face sunscreen - I also use their SPF moisturizer (recommended by my Dermatologist & I LOVES it!!)

Weird about the Aveeno face sunscreen!! I have super, super, SUPER sensitive skin and it's one of the only ones I can use. Although even though I'm super fair I only use SPF 55 b/c my doctor told me anything over 55 isn't any more effective, it just cost more money. Maybe try the 55 one??

Thanks for the warning on the Lash Stiletto... I am a sucker for marketing and have wanted it for a while now. Thanks for saving my $7.

I am a huge fan of the Aveeno sunscreen though, although I usually only use SPF 30. I once chemical burn so bad from Coppertone that I ended up in the after-hours MedOne (a step down from the ER). I have also had a burning reaction to Banana Boat sunscreen.

Basically, I am under the belief that some sunscreen batches are just bad. If I was you I might try calling the customer service # for Aveeno and see if they'll send you a refund?

As for my biggest product disappointment... I'd say that award goes to Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel. It just didn't work for me. Blah.

I am a sucker for mascara. I love it! I have tried all different kinds and brands at all types of prices.
The best one thus far...Maybelline's The Colossal Volume express. It is hands down the best I've used in a while.

I agree with Rach! The Smooth Away is not nearly as cool as it sounds! The process itself doesn't hurt or anything, although it's more time consuming than shaving. Upon first inspection of your newly-smoothed-away legs, you'll probably be impressed. Until you start rubbing your hands in different directions & find that dreaded leg stubble. Plus, the smoothing pads are only good for like ONE leg, if you're lucky. I'll stick with shaving or waxing, thank you!

On another note.. Has anyone tried the Bump-its? I'm dying to!

I had the same thing happen with Aveeno sunblock!! but I thought it was me and sun having a problem. So glad to know it wasn't me!

Loukia said...

OH... love this! Do more, okay? Now I know what NOT to buy! That sucks about the Aveeno... we have a children's version for the boys, but have not used it yet, as we're still on our Coppertone bottles. I'm scared to try it on them now! And the only eye makeup remover that ever works for me is the one by Biotherm. Works great. Nothing else, no other brand, does the trick for me! And? My favourite mascara, after all these years, is the basic and very cheap Maybelline mascara - you know, the green and pink one? I've tried so many others, and none are as good, in my opinion!

Do not, I repeat do not buy any of the Sally Hershberger hair products. I bought a couple at Walgreens and had to return and I really never feel so compelled to return something, usually just use it up and never buy again. This was THE worst stuff, like elmer's glue and smells terrible. Thats what I get for trying to find a good stand in for my precious Bumble and Bumble products.

LZ @ My Messy Paradise said...

Aveeno Positively Ageless line...really, all Aveeno face products. My skin is decent, but one use of any of these and I am full of zits...

Also, Kiehl's Tinted Moisturizer. So thick and sticky. Even if you try to dilute it with other lotion, it doesn't work. Gross.

VanderbiltWife said...

the CoverGirl lip stain. The shade I got was basically neon pink on, it does not last like it says it will, and it makes your lips dry as a board. BLEGH.

Thanks for the news on the Lash Stiletto. I'll stick to good old Maybelline Great Lash (waterproof!).

I wish I could find a sunscreen that did NOT make my face feel like it was on fire. I use an Olay moisturizer for everyday but it's only SPF15.

I may be partial since I am an Independent Beauty Consultant with Mary Kay but before I tried tons of eye makeup remover even Clinque with so-so results. I love the Mary Kay eye makeup remover! and I have so many loyal eye makeup remover clients!

The Neutrogena Dry Touch Sun Block ROCKS! SPF70 for my kids and it is the best (it smells really good, too)! I have a friend who works in a dermatologist's office and she gives me free bottles (although I would for sure pay for it anyway!)

I actually really like the Neutrogena liquid eye makeup remover, too.

I SO am loving the Stiletto commercials as well. It looks uber chic and trendy. Thanks for the insider info.

Almay makes an eye makeup remover that comes on presoaked little pads...it's divine...you've gotta try it. It's oil free so you don't feel like the Exxon Valdez when you're through...

I am a TOTAL sucker for advertising AND packaging for that matter. I've wondered about that Stiletto mascara, and I'm glad you have reviewed it!

Just because I swear by it, I thought I'd plug The Body Shop's eye make up remover. It's the bomb, works perfectly and a bottle lasts me forEVER.
